KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL (August 22, 2001) - Space Shuttle Discovery
concluded Mission STS-105 with a landing at Kennedy Space Center Shuttle
Landing Facility (SLF) Runway 15 at 2:23 p.m. EDT today. Landing was originally
scheduled for 12:46 p.m. EDT today but was postponed one orbit due to an
isolated rain shower just south of the SLF, which dissipated in time to
allow a landing on today's second opportunity. Landing was also originally
scheduled for Runway 33, the southeast to northwest approach, but was changed
to Runway 15, the northwest to southeast approach, due to clouds which
were building to the south of the SLF. Shuttle landing rules allow the
landing runway to be switched up to 10 minutes prior to an actual landing.
Discovery traveled an estimated 4.3 million miles during the mission, which
ended at an unofficial mission elapsed time of 11 days, 21 hours, 13 minutes,
52 seconds. Returned to Earth was the International Space Station (ISS)
Expedition Two Crew consisting of Yury Usachev, Jim Voss and Susan Helms.
The three spent a total of 167 days in space, just shy of the U.S. record
188 days in space achieved by astronaut Shannon Lucid aboard the Mir Space
Station in 1996.
